Monday Morning Memo - 9.1.2025
Wider Horizons Events and Information
Please extend a warm welcome to our new staff member Activity Coordinator (and newest member of our community as well) Rachael Hogan (see attached photo). We’re in the process of setting her up with a Wider Horizons email address and I’ll send that out as soon as it’s available (holiday weekend and all that). Rachael’s interesting bio is also attached.
Women’s Coffee is at Ellen Taussig’s home this coming Wednesday, September 3, at 10:30 am. Ellen’s address is 748 B Boyleston Ave E (between Roy and Aloha on Capitol Hill’s west side. Parking is findable within a block and if you need access assistance, there is an elevator. It’s all a bit hidden, so call Ellen at 206 799-9157 (or me at 206 650-3586) if you need to. Ellen will provide ample coffee and tea; bring your favorite treats: muffins, scones, fruits, nuts, and anything chocolate!
2. Men’s Coffee is at Ada’s on 15th at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 3. Contact Michael Kischner for any details you need: mbkischner@comcast.net or 206 696-4090.
3. Thursday morning’s All-Member Zoom is happening, per usual, this Thursday, September 4 at 9:30 am. Sue Lerner will send out the link and questions on Wednesday.
4. Sunday Arboretum Walk, September 7. Meet Dick Zerbe at 9 am at the Arboretum’s Graham Visitors Center.
5. Happy Hour at Jimmy’s, Sunday, September 7, 4:00 – 6:00 pm. If it’s your first time, let me know and I’ll explain how to access the somewhat obscure free parking under the building.
6. Make sure you’re on the RSVP list for our 10th Anniversary Party on Thursday, September 18, at the NW African American Museum, 3 pm – 7 pm. Our deejay will be spinning music from the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s as you arise until the program begins a bit before 4 pm, followed by dinner and more music (but not so loud you can’t hear each other). The event, which emphasizes mingling and schmoozing and meeting people you haven’t met, also features a lively program of notables (Bob Anderson, Jeanne Marie Thomas, David Okimoto, Charles Heaney)--as well as a chance to see the Museum’s amazing permanent and special exhibits! Let me know if you need a ride. P.S. No alcohol is being served, but don’t let that deter you from coming. The buffet dinner, catered by That Brown Girl Cooks will be yummy!

Michael and Beret Kischner highly recommend Ricardo Franca. He has Sundays and Mondays off from his full-time job and would love to hear from other Wider Horizons members who need hourly chores. Ricardo is very talented and flexible (see the attachment for more detail). You can reach him by phone at 347 695 5165. Beret and Michael would be happy answer any questions about Ricardo's work (see above for their contact info).
Shared by Bill Lippe, a song that Bill thinks “will resonate big time with our members.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_yJFbvOkXs. FYI, Bill says The Troubadour is a major music venue in Los Angeles where many top musicians played early in their careers and got their starts.
