Monday Morning Memo - 8.17.2026
Wider Horizons Events and Information
Update on Nora Langan: Nora is doing well at home, post-brain surgery for a malignant tumor. She’s going out as well as receiving visits, meals, and escort to medical appointments from our members. Call me or email me if you’d like to help and aren’t already on the schedule. You can sign up to bring a meal at this link: https://mealtrain.com/75qk21 Nora’s radiation treatments will likely begin in a few weeks, and we’ll need drivers for that (it’s a short round-trip appointment to Swedish with complimentary above-ground parking). The treatments themselves last less than a half hour, Mon-Fri for several weeks.
Thursday Morning All-Member Zoom Dialogue with Sue Lerner on August 20 at 9:30 am (and you don’t have to be a member to attend). Open 2 links to join the zoom meeting and follow these steps: Open the invitation here; then open the Zoom link in the invitation. Look for a reminder on Wednesday.
This Friday’s Men’s Coffee will be at 9:30 am rather than 10:30 am at Victrola on 15th Ave E.
Join the Arboretum Walk, led by Richard Zerbe, Sunday, August 23. Meet at 9 am at the Arboretum’s Graham Visitors Center.
Andrea Trexler announces that the weekly Chinese Mahjong group will be meeting at the Montlake Community Center on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm starting September 8. There will always be someone from Wider Horizons to provide instruction for beginners. It’s important to note that it’s the Chinese version because a lot of people want to play American Mahjong, which is significantly different.
Who would like to improve their clothing repair skills: mending holes, hemming, buttons, etc.? And who has the expertise (and willingness) to teach skills in this area? Maybe just a couple of sessions?
And who’s interested in a one-off discussion about early humanoids? https://www.history.com/articles/human-ancestors-first-walk-upright-bipedalism

2. Gary and Kristin Sampson sponsored a trip for about 10 of our members to see a Seattle Storm game yesterday. Gary said they had loads of fun and the Storm “almost, almost won.” See the attached photo.
