Wider Horizons Events and Information
Welcome our newest member Michael Carney. Read his bio (attached) and welcome him to Wider Horizons.
Thursday morning’s All-Member Zoom is happening, per usual, this Thursday, October 23 at 9:30 am. Sue Lerner will send out the link and questions on Wednesday.
Sunday Arboretum Walk, October 26. It will be led by Barb Klube. Meet her at 9 am at the Arboretum’s Graham Visitors Center.
Gay Hoerler, expert seamstress and collector of sewing paraphernalia, is offering a sewing bee/clinic for up to 4 people at her Capitol Hill home: 2 pm on Thursday, November 6.
Bring your sewing or mending projects—especially those with which you’d like some help. Need a button? The right color thread? The right tool for the right job? Gay can has all of these and can also help you execute. We’ll chat while we work (like in the olden days). No zipper replacements! Light refreshments. All genders welcome. Let me know if you’d like to attend, I’ll keep a running list, and Gay is willing to do repeats. I’ll also send you her address and arrange carpooling.

From our friends at the Village to Village Network: An informative seminar on Medicare changes/open enrollment decisions: Here is a link to the recorded presentation to watch at your convenience or share with others. The presentation slides can be downloaded here. Personal note: The expert who put this together is Bob Blancato, a retired DC lobbyist for the “aging network” and a long-time colleague of mine. I know some of you are concerned about the changes that are occurring in Medicare and Bob’s info is first rate This is where you can go for solid information.
Richard Zerbe set 3 state age group running records in Idaho a few weeks ago: 100 meters, 200 meters and 1500 race walk. We have some awesome, competitive senior athletes in our group!
Carol Mirman alerted us to the annual sale of the Women’s Shelter Jewelry Project on Friday, November 7: Events | WomensShelterJewelry
If you subscribe to HBO, Micki Lippe has a strong recommendation for you: https://www.hbomax.com/movies/if-youre-not-in-the-obit-eat-breakfast/6b5172b6-f276-4025-95cc-06dfeb27d7c9 She says, “the movie has invigorated me the way nothing else has for a long time.”
Ann Lawrence brought an interesting health service to our attention: DispatchCare Same-Day Medical Care - Insurance Accepted | DispatchHealth brings urgent medical care to your home. It is covered by most private insurance and Medicare. For now, you can call and request the service yourself, but starting on November 11, you have to be referred by your PCP.
